Let the Cubans Loose…

July 2014.

Let the Cubans loose…….

Well that’s what it felt like I’d done when I let some of the greatest Cuban musicians loose in the studio in Havana, Cuba in late 2013.

And, I’m truly thankful too. A fascinating recording is on it’s way.
By not constricting these wonderful musicians too much I had hoped to allow them more creativity and expression in the music making.

Anyway,

You can get an idea of their playful energy and general craziness on this video…..especially at the end.

Let the Cubans loose…

Paul Van Ross records with ClaveMania

Late February 2014.

After many rehearsals and discussions finally the great day came.

The newly formed group CLAVEMANIA record in the studio.

Led by Jonathon Cohen this septet was set to record a whole album over a weekend in the old Atlantis recording studios in Port Melbourne.

The album features all original Latin music.

Was wonderful to be in the studio again with like minded musicians.

Personnel:

Jonathon Cohen – keyboard
Elizabeth Obando – E bass
Toby Bender – drum set / percussion
Rodolfo Hachaverria Panga – percussion
Lazaro Ernesto Numa Pompa – trumpet
Jack Beeche – Alto / tenor saxophone
Paul Van Ross – soprano / tenor saxophone & flute

Extra hand clapping with Tram Nguyen.

And funny thing was we bumped into drummer David Jones who was scouting the area for talent!!

Here’s a clip of the horns rehearsing a tango piece.

Paul Van Ross recording with David Jones

February 2014.

Turned out to be my pleasure to be in the studio again. Wonderful vocalist Iaki Vallejo had assembled an all star band to record some songs. She had some special arrangements penned by a Columbian musician.

Line up included two Australian music legends; David Jones (d) and Evripedis Evripidou (bass). It was an absolute pleasure watching these two musicians work both in the recording studio and at the mixing desk.

Quite astonishing to find a wonderful studio like this in the backstreets of Moorabin!!!

Look out for the album later in the year….

Personnel:

Iaki Vallejo – vocals
David Jones – drums / percussion
Evripides Evripidou – bass / guitar
David Allardice – piano / organ
Luis – congas / percussion
Paul Van Ross – tenor saxophone
Lazaro Ernesto Numa Pompa – trumpet
